How do I say goodbye to Boracay?

On our third and last day, it was breakfast as usual at Vintana. I was expecting the same menu because after serving all the food I can think of yesterday, what else was left? And lo, there was a lot more! Half of the dishes in the buffet were new ones. I was in pig heaven! I took a bite of everything and walked away with a light heart and a full stomach. So that's where all the heaviness goes.:)
We immediately returned to our hotel room to change into our swimwear. For the first time in 3 days, the sun was up and shining. It's the perfect time to take a dip in the hotel pool. My son failed to enjoy the beach yesterday for it had been raining and the water was cold. This was his last chance to splash around.
After requesting the pool attendant to pump air into my son's lifesaver, we waded in the not-so-warm waters of the infinity pool. The weather was chilly yesterday which explained why the sun's heat hadn't penetrated the pool water yet.
The view from the pool was nothing short of breathtaking, the turquoise waters of Boracay sparkling and shimmering from the sunlight. I could almost hear the splashing waves.
My son particularly enjoyed playing with the cascading water from one of the tiny waterfalls in the pool. After an hour, we reluctantly said goodbye to the already warm water. If my son had his way, he would stay there while we pack our bags.:)
A view of the sea from Shangri-la's lobby.
The checkout process was fast. The lobby personnel gave us the bill and after he swiped our credit card, we're on our way. No more waiting while they check the room for property damage or missing things from the mini-bar. They do take your word at face value. They figured they could always charge your card afterwards if you had been naughty.

Since our flight was not yet until 4pm, we left our luggages at the reception while we did a little sightseeing around the hotel.
Just one of the many private sanctuaries around the hotel where guests can relax and feel at one with nature.

Lush tropical gardens surrounding the resort. 90% of guests during our stay were foreigners. I can imagine why Brangelina (Brad Pitt-Angelina Jolie) thought of vacationing here. Unfortunately, some Filipinos couldn't keep their mouths shut. According to some, they were here. But a reliable source said they never were. They backed out when the news was leaked to the media.

After a while, we requested for a golf buggy to take us to CHI Spa. We decided to burn some time taking pictures. If not for my son (and the price of the treatments!), I would go there for a massage. An hour of massage would cost you Php6,000 and a 4-hour treatment inside a CHI Villa would set you back Php11,500. I can already hold a spa party in a decent place in Manila for that amount. Or...said my guilty conscience, "it can feed several destitute families for a week".

CHI Spa entrance.
Odd-looking bamboo and rock embellishment in CHI's reception area.
Spa Pool

Treatment Villas encompassing the pool.
I wasn't able to take pictures inside a CHI Villa, so I got some from Shangri-La Boracay's site. What do you think? Is it worth the cost? An hour of massage inside a regular spa in the US costs around US$100 or Php4,500. Foreigners and the really rich would definitely find CHI Spa's rates reasonable.
Spa Villa Bath
Banana Leaf Treatment inside a Spa Villa.
Time flew fast and we had to depart for the airport. After the considerably calm boat ride, we were back at the comfortable lounge where a number of guests were already waiting for the shuttle service. The van arrived 20 minutes later.

At the airport, the Shangri-la personnel not only unloaded our bags but also brought it for weighing inside the terminal. He also asked for our passports and e-tickets so he could take care of everything. After a few minutes, he emerged and gave us our boarding passes and luggage tags. He then bade us goodbye and left in a breeze. Outstanding service! He succeeded in making me feel like a real VIP.
The Caticlan airport was a little busy that day. And while waiting for our flight, I saw a lady foreigner boarding a plane wearing nothing but a two-piece swimsuit. A little bit shocking to my sensibilities.:)

The priceless look of awe on my son's face when he witnessed a plane taking off right before his very eyes. Something you don't usually see in other airports.
The Air Philippines plane was early and left 15 minutes ahead of schedule. Alas, it's the end of a nice vacation that forever changed my resort standards. So, how do I say goodbye to Boracay?

May this three part article serves as my farewell to the island with the most beautiful beach I have ever seen.

A paradise called Boracay

We woke up on our second day in high spirits, even though my son kept me up most of the night. We went straight to the hotel's restaurant, Vintana, where buffet breakfast was being served. We had to wait almost 10 minutes because there was already a line of guests waiting for their turn to be assisted to their tables. Only one usherette was doing the job, that's why. They should add more manpower. You don't make hungry, no...make it starving guests wait.
The restaurant was impressively decorated with eye-catching artworks similar to the Igorot-made handicrafts from Baguio. The same indigenous stuff dot the hotel rooms and premises.
The buffet spread was spectacular.
The variety of food was amazing.
It's only rivaled by Sofitel's Spirals but Shangri-la won by a tiny margin. Mango juice gave them the lead. My favorite fruit juice was missing in Sofitel's spread.
Different kinds of bread.
Assorted cheese and cold cuts.
Yogurt and pastries. I love their freshly-made yogurt. It tasted like a sour version of cream cheese.
Fruits. Their mangoes were really sweet but Cebu mangoes are still my favorite.
After our sumptuous breakfast, we headed to the Adventure Zone. According to their logbook, my son was the first and cutest (my logbook said this) guest of the day.
My two boys in a sea of balls.
My one-year-old was even brave enough to try the huge slide.
Swings and all sorts of toys are available to kids in this huge play gym. Just don't forget to bring your kid's socks. The hotel sells them at Php250/pair. It's more expensive than a play area's entrance fee.
After an hour, we were ready to depart for the pristine beaches that made Boracay a popular tourist destination. But before going to the boat stations, we decided to check Shangri-la's private beach. It was raining and the beachfront was deserted. It was a small strip of white sand beach similar to that of Shangri-la Mactan in Cebu, only a little bigger.
Shangri-la provides free shuttle service to and from d'Mall at station 2. The vans leave every 3 hours in the morning till late afternoon. From early evening until midnight, the shuttle service drops and picks up guests every 30 minutes. For guests like me who wanted to experience commuting from the hotel to the White Beach, they only need to ride a motorized tricycle in front of the resort's main entrance. One-way fare is at Php150/tricycle.
From d'Mall at station 2, we trekked to station 3 where our companions were staying. It was drizzling a little but I was so mesmerized by the beauty in front of me that I wasn't bothered a single bit. People were all over the beach, unmindful of the rain.
The beach was mushroomed by establishments of all kinds...from restaurants to stalls selling beach wear and souvenirs, you can find it here. Being the type to prefer secluded resorts with lots of privacy, I would usually be bothered by the bustle and crowd. But surprisingly, I enjoyed our 20-minute walk so much. The stalls lining the beach were the life of Boracay and without them, it wouldn't be the same. In fact, they only added to the charm of this already magnificent place.
I was a little disappointed not to find a seafood buffet, though. I was planning on sinking my teeth into some lobster and crab. Later on, I found out that seafood here costs like gold. Maybe because the establishments
in this place cater mostly to foreign tourists. We had lunch at Luna Rossa instead, an Italian joint. Food here was expensive and failed to meet my standards. The average cost per order is around Php420.
The beach was clean. Thanks to a government mandate that imposes a littering fine.
Patio umbrellas lined the beachfront.
Fine powdery white sand, only in Boracay! I've been to the beaches of Cebu, Bohol, Batangas, Pangasinan and Antique but nothing came close to this kind of perfection. The beach was free from floating plants and organisms. The only fish I had seen was a dead tilapia on the sand which was immediately carried away by the waves.
Now I know why people are all buzzing about this island. If there's one place I would surely return to, it would be this piece of paradise called Boracay. I would gladly stay in the water forever and become a mermaid.

Shangri-La's Boracay Resort & Spa

Last February 27, we left for our first trip to Boracay. I had been such a big Cebu fan that I never thought of going to Boracay until now. The only places I had been to in the Visayas were Bohol, Antique and Cebu (thrice!). If I only knew what I was missing in Aklan!

Our flight was supposed to depart at around 10am but the Cebu Pacific plane was delayed. Grrr...they even made us wait inside a packed bus for more than 30 minutes while they do their aircraft maintenance check.

After an hour and a half, we're finally on our way. A few moments after winning one of the prizes (a Cebu Pacific pouch) from the in-flight trivia game, our plane began its descent and landed violently on the airport's short and narrow runway. Quite understandable. It would have been worse if we ran out of runway.
I can already smell the sea when I stepped on Boracay soil for the first time.

The Shangri-La Resort's fully air-conditioned guest lounge looked like a hotel lobby beside the pier. It offered guests all the amenities...cold towels, welcome refreshments and luxurious washrooms. My son loved their Dalandan juice so much he never wanted to leave.
And he was right...because when the speedboat arrived to bring us to the resort, it was already raining hard. We found it difficult to board the boat because it was rocking from the waves splashing against it. It's good though that they had life vests for everyone, even for my son.
After 15 minutes in the turbulent ocean, we finally arrived at Shangri-La's private dock.
This golf buggy brought us to the hotel.
Our hotel room was really cozy with a king size bed and also featured a flat-screen television, DVD player
and an iPod dock.
Room rates start at Php20,800/night inclusive of applicable taxes and service charge. It also comes with free roundtrip airport transfers, daily buffet breakfast and complimentary broadband internet connectivity inside the room.

The room even had a veranda overlooking the resort's lush gardens.

The bathroom was huge and gives a view of the bedroom from the glass walls
 if we raise the blinds.

L'Occitane toiletries were provided.  Its invigorating citrus scent lingered for a long time. The lotion failed to moisturize, though.

Still too tired from our tumultuous trip, we ordered room service for lunch. The steak was really good but the Spaghetti Bolognese was even better. It's the best I had ever tasted. I wonder what they put on that sauce to make it taste like heaven. The Apple Cake with Pistachio Ice Cream we had for dessert was also delicious. Our lunch costs around (Php1,700).

After a short nap, we were ready for a stroll around the hotel. Unfortunately for my son, the Adventure Zone was already closed. So we decided to proceed to the Entertainment Center where guests can play at the basketball arcade or use the tennis table without a cost.

There were also broadband-connected computers equipped with Wii Fit consoles.

The Rock Band Room...but guests would have to rent this per hour.

We went next to the Health Club which offered the usual gym equipments, lockers,
shower rooms and jacuzzi.

Shangri-La Resort's lobby at night.

We were too busy exploring that we lost track of time. The hotel's restaurants were closed, so we ordered room service again for dinner. Unfortunately, we got our first taste of bad service. The food arrived after
1.5 hrs instead of the usual 30 minutes because they misplaced our order sheet.

And that's not all...the fish was fried when we ordered for grilled. The Clam Chowder tasted worse than breast milk, with undercooked clams that had the consistency of rubber.

It's a good thing we ordered Mango Pudding with Sago Pearls for dessert. It's the savior of the night!
We decided to complain about everything. The manager on duty personally went to our room, apologized and offered something to replace the bad food. We lost our appetite by then and declined. We were promised though that we won't get charged for everything, including the heavenly Mango Pudding. Well, at least.:)
